This proposal, if I am correct in saying so, was written to propose an alternative to the one written by Joe Becker in which he presents a method of decomposing each Ethiopian character into its constituent consonant and vowel pair. The proposal drafted by the group of Ethiopians (the name of the committee escapes me) addressed the obvious and subtle weaknesses of Becker's proposal and presented a viable and more robhust solution. Unfortunately, what end came of this effort is unknown. Given the possibility of the imposition of an unsuitable standard onto the Ethiopian script, I feel it is necessary to revive and follow through with the efforts of the original team. To this end, I am willing to serve as a facilitator/coordinator of a new group of individuals who would like to see the alternate proposal brought to the Unicode Technical Committee's (UTC - the decision making body within Unicode) attention. As I see it, the following actions are imperative for our success (no order of execution or importance intended/implied): 0. Set up a mailing list (in a few days) 1. Status of previous effort - Where did it end? Why did it end? 2. Status of Ethiopan script in Unicode : - Has the UTC voted on Beckers Proposal? - Has the UTC decided on any standards for the Ethiopian script? 3. Select core group of interested individuals from diverse (relevant) fields of expertise. A large group might lead to inefficiency. 4. Review of previous proposal. 5. Contact Unicode review board. Once again, these are my preliminary thoughts on how we should procede at a macro level. I would appreciate any input you might have to offer. I would appreciate it if you used 'Group Reply' until the mail alias is set up. Thanks.
