The Faculty of Business and Economics runs both undergraduate and post graduate regular programmes. In conjunction with the Extension Division it also provides and supervises Evening Degree and Diploma Programmes.

Undergraduate Programmes

The Regular Undergraduate Programmes

The regular undergraduate programmes of the Faculty are four year Programmes in Accounting, Economics, Management and Public Administration, leading to a Bachelor's Degree in the respective disciplines. The first year of study is the Freshman Programme where common courses are offered to all students before their placement to each Department. Each Department has its own entrance requirements which are based on a student's overall performance in the Freshman year and in specific courses relevant to it.

The Extension Undergraduate Programmes

The Extension Programme of the Faculty of Business and Economics offers evening classes leading to Diplomas and Degrees. Degree programmes are in Accounting, Economics, Management and Public Administration offered with the same standard and rigour as the regular programme. Diploma programmes are in Accounting and in Supervisory Management. However, the maximum credit hours allowed in a semester is twelve an(l the normal load is 9 to 10 credit hours. This makes the Extension programmes to extend up to seven years for the B.A. degree and five years for the diploma.

Accounting Programme

Accounting education started at the tertiary level in 1958 with the offering of Accounting course(s) within the Faculty of Arts of the University College of Addis Ababa. This grew to the Commerce Department in the Faculty of Arts offering Banking, Finance and Accounting courses. In 1963 the College of Business Administration (CBA) was founded as independent college consisting of Accounting and management Departments. The CBA merged with other Faculties and Departments to form the College of Social Sciences in 197. The Department of Accounting was one of the large departments in the College. Currently with the establishment of the Faculty of Business and Economics a total of 310 regular and 700 extension students are enrolled in the programme with a faculty of 14 teaching staff.

The overall objective of the Department of Accounting is to strengthen the Ethiopian Economy by developing professionally trained manpower that will be needed in all aspects of business and industry as well as government organizations.

Accounting Degree Programme

The Regular programme offers only B.A. Degree in Accounting while the Extension programme offers Diploma and Degree in Accounting. Students are required to complete 132 credit hours to be awarded a B.A. Degree in Accounting with a CGPA of 2.00 and major area GPA of 2.00 at the final year of study. Out of the total credit hours in the Degree programme J4 credit hours are in Accounting (Major areas).

Accounting Diploma Programme (Evening Programme)

The Accounting Diploma Programme takes three and a half year to complete. A total of 65 credit hours must be taken to complete the programme, and out of the total, 32 credit hours are in Accounting that give emphasis on financial Accounting and Finance; 6 credit hours are in Management and the rest are on general education courses. A student must have a CGPA of 2.00 in his final year of study to be awarded a Diploma in Accounting.

Economics Programme

The B.A. Degree Programme in Economics has a history extending back to the early fifties and is intended to produce experts in economic analysis to business enterprises and government institutions in the context of a developing economy. Since 1981 alone, more than 900 students have graduated from the programme of which 664 were regular students the rest being extension students. A total of 300 regular and 400 extension students are currently enrolled in the same programme with a faculty of 20.

The B.A. degree in Economics is awarded to a student who has completed a total of 132 credit hours of study including 36 credit hours of courses taken at the Freshman level. A student must attain an overall CGPA of 2.00 and a major CGPA of 2.00 to be awarded a degree.

Management and Public Administration Programme

The Department was formed by bringing the department of Management of the former College of Business Administration and the Department of Public Administration of the former Faculty of Arts together. However, the courses being offered in the department have still maintained their identity in terms of orientation.

Degree Programme

The Bachelor's Degree Programme in Management and Public Administration aims to impart knowledge to and develop skills of graduates which they need to effectively manage Business or Public Institutions.

The programme is designed in such a way that a student joining the Department would be required to choose between Management and Public Administration streams after the student has gone one and half years of study in the Department. Therefore, in the remaining one and half years the student will take courses with greater dose in the stream of his choice.

The minimum requirement for graduation is 138 credit hours. Of this minimum a student must take courses in the stream he chooses and the requirement is 65 and 72 credit hours in Management and Public Administration streams respectively.

Whereas the overall requirement for earning a bachelor's degree is a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 (on a scale of 4) the student must also attain; a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in the major fields of studies.

The Degree Programme in Management and Public Administration is currently administered to regular and extension students with same level of rigours.

Diploma Programme

The Department of Management and Public Administration also offers a Diploma Programme in Supervisory Management for Extension students. The programme, aims to improve the supervisory management skills of students at intermediate level. Although the programme is terminal by its nature, graduates with outstanding academic performance are admitted in the Degree programme to continue their studies to earn a bachelor's degree in management.
