The study of economics as a discipline in higher education of Ethiopia goes as far back as the start of the University itself. The Department of Economics was established at the Faculty of Arts with the founding of the University College of Addis Ababa (UCAA) in 1950.
In 1958 Management Education started at the tertiary level with the offering of accounting course(s) within the Faculty of Arts of the University College of Addis Ababa.
In 1963 the College of Business Administration (CBA) was established as an independent College consisting of Management and Accounting Departments.
In 1976 the College of Business Administration, Faculty of Arts, and School of Social Work were merged to form the College o Social Sciences.
The Faculty of Business and Economics was constituted as a separate faculty consisting of the departments of Accounting, Economics, and Management and public Administration in November l990 It is designed to meet the rapidly growing needs for trained manpower in the fields of Accounting, economics, Management and Public Administration. The objective of this faculty is to produce people trained in management and economic decision making who possess the necessary skills and interdisciplinary knowledge required for growing skills; and interdisciplinary knowledge required for a growing economic and highly complex private and public business community.
The Faculty of Business and
Economics has regular enrollment of
about 1000 students (excluding
Freshman Year) and Extension
enrollment of 1800 students. Out of the
Extension students 17% are in the
Diploma Programme and the rest in the
Degree Programme. The Faculty of
Business and Economics is one of the
largest faculties in Addis Ababa
University. T he Faculty has a staff size
of 52 currently active another 17 on
study leave abroad. Although a large
faculty, it tries to emphasize close
student-faculty interaction.

Objectives
The Curriculum of the Faculty of
Business and Economics generally
focuses on the development and
promotion of the professional and
technical skills of the student. It tries to
prepare students for careers in Business,
Economics, Research, Government
Service, Consultancy and Employment in
private and public enterprise It
attempts to introduce student to the
advanced techniques and modern
concepts in Accounting, Economics,
Management and Public Administration
in their suitable forms as they apply to
Ethiopian conditions. It stresses
academic competence and professional
excellence; and thus international
standards and rigour in the
dissemination of knowledge is
emphasized in the fields of training
offered by Departments.
a) To produce graduates who have
sound general education background,
orientation, professional values and
ability to evaluate economic issues
and problems from an
interdisciplinary viewpoint and a
holistic approach for problem solving
and policy formulation.
b) To produce graduates trained in the
specialized process of economic
management at all levels and all
sectors that are capable of
developing and analyzing economic
programs and policies.
c) To train experts equipped with
modern skills in Accounting and
Auditing, Economic Analysis, and
Public and Business Management.
d) To conduct applied research in
different field, provide consultancy
and advisory services to governmental
and non-governmental institutions,
and collaborate in joint projects with
national and international
organizations.
